A Summary of the Epic of Beowulf Essay - 1386 Words

Beowulf is a story that takes place in medieval Europe, the main part of the story is about a knight, Beowulf, who has to fight evil creatures such as a dragon. No one is exactly sure who wrote Beowulf, Paleographers believe that the soul surviving manuscript was copied down in the late tenth century or early eleventh. This early copy of Beowulf is still around today. This single manuscript can be found in the British Library in London. Scholars believe that the story itself was written between 650-800. In some ways the Danes see Beowulf as somewhat of a Jesus Christ type character. He had saved them from the evil of Grendel, and Jesus had saved the Jews from their sins. Another Christian thing was King Hrothgars throne was said to be protected by God. Also towards the end the men prey to God for the other men who have died to be able to make it to Heaven. Pagan views can be seen when Grendel attacks and kills the first Geat, and drinks his blood from his veins. This can be looked at as a Pagan practice by drinking a victims blood. When they drink the blood it is believed to give the person drinking all the powers, knowledge, strength and soul of the dead. When Beowulfs is cremated this can also to be looked at as Pagan belief because they believe that burning the body sends the soul to its afterlife. Another archeological aspect in Beowulf is when Hrothgar decided to build Heorot, a huge mead-hall, a place of joy and security. I both agree, and disagree with what the author is saying in this article. He starts by saying that our chances of succeeding are influenced by the generation of our family that came before us, and by our network of friends and acquaintances. He applies the term â€Å"social capital,† to this. The next five paragraphs are spent arguing against â€Å"color-blind absolutism,† that is, the idea that we should ignore race altogether. To this point in the article, I could not agree more. I believe most rational thinking people learn from their parents, older siblings and even their extended families. They see the mistakes that their families made and want to do better. In my family for instance, I am the youngest of six children. My parents grew up in farming communities and had little or no education. I was the first in the family to go straight through high school and graduate. Only the four youngest of six children received a high school diploma or equivalent, and only myself and one of my brothers has had any education beyond that. I see this as a natural evolution that takes several generations. Some of my older siblings did not see the value of an education, or of planning your future and setting goals. While I saw the mistakes they made, it took me several years to realize that my success was dependent on setting goals, and the actions I took to achieve them. I also agree with the author assertion that society cannot be completely colorblind. We do not need to pretend that we are not different, we need to accept and embrace each other’s differences. We need to recognize and respect the each other’s cultures. Color and race will forever be used, just as height and weight are used to describe people. There is nothing wrong with acknowledging our differences, as long as we do not perceive those differences as negatives. I have to disagree with the remainder of the article. He has taken offense, apparently, to the perception that blacks need to be given preferential treatment to achieve a degree of success. I believe that he is arguing that affirmative action is demeaning to blacks, but what he should be arguing against is not affirmative action, but white society’s perception of affirmative action. Used as it was intended, affirmative action does not give minorities preferential treatment, it gives them an opportunity to compete with other applicants of equal qualifications. Human nature being what it is, opportunities do not always present themselves solely because of a persons skills, qualifications, or persistence. I recently read that a high percentage of positions are filled not through newspaper ads, or recruiting agencies, but through word of mouth. The best place for employers to look for new employees is often from their current employees. If this is true, then unless your work place is already racially diverse, most of your new hires are likely to come from similar racial or ethnic background as the majority of your workforce. Breaking this cycle takes a conscious effort. I believe this is the case in organized labor organizations. Perhaps there is no conscious effort to keep blacks or minorities out, but a desire to get one’s family and friends in, so that they too may enjoy the benefits of a good job. I believe I benefited from affirmative action when I joined the union apprenticeship program. Had it not been for the pressure applied on unions to diversify, there is little doubt in my mind that someone’s son or nephew would have received that position. And that person would most likely have been a white male. The intention of affirmative action is to level the playing field, not to tilt it in the direction of minorities. If it is improperly used, we must not blame the program; we must blame the people that are administering it. Universities should not lower standards, but encourage academically qualified minorities to apply and support programs that help increase the pool of qualified applicants. While it is true that an individuals success depends largely on that individuals own drive and self determination, history has taught us that things are not going to get better without some governmental intervention. Question: Explain Immigration Issue In America? Answer: Immigration seems to be the most integral part in the American economy and culture which seems to have cast an extensive effect on the congenial development of the country as a whole. It seems that immigrants mostly from Asian and African countries creating social and economical problems for the country. A report of Lithman states in 2011 America has received more than 1 million immigration and 74.21% are from the different Africa and Asian countries. It is also stated that most of these immigrants come to this continent in seek of the job. As they barely have enough abilities to offer themselves with a quality job, they seem to get piled up in the street, outside the convenient, parking lot and others. However, they have recommended using the taxpayers money to help them finding suitable jobs and rendering good jobs. But there are so many groups in America seem to have sprouted in the past few years that are coherently against of the immigrants. American Immigration Control Foundati on is such a group which blatantly is in against of powering the immigrants being charged up by the taxpayers money (Sano et al.). The group has for a long been accusing these immigrants for creating problems in American economy and culture as a whole. These people are barely having any citizenship of America which allows them to create problems. On the other hand, social integration is getting disturbed essentially. It leads the common people to suffer a lot and make problems among the common Americans. Even most of the illegal and anti social problems seem to sprout from these people. Streets of downtown America is getting seriously affected by these people (Schmidt, Seguchi and Thompson). However, it is needed to be stated if attempts may be taken up in this order to make them perfectly civilized and addressing them properly developed, the problem can be resolved. On the other hand, it appears to be a quite significant approach for bringing common people provides relief. Problems arise when these immigrants are completely put underestimated and treated them as trodden. Rendering a light of humanity towards them may prove to be a proficient approach which helps them to develop intrinsically in their life. As pointed out by De Fina and King most of the immigration to America are illegal and unethical it creates most of the problems which can barely be resolved. The issue has become so much controversial that it seems to have created different serious problems. On the other hand, it has also a certain matter of political play. Essentially American Government, as pointed out by Cohn, is paving doors for the people of the other countries to engage themselves in the internal affairs of this country. The issue seemed to have been quite intrinsic which seemed to have created distinctive problems and engaged into poignancy. It also seems to have become an intrinsic problem which leads to the core of the problems. It also has become a serious matter for the te chnical development as well. As the internal security, heath and other serious matters appear to get disturbed, most of the people barely support this issue. However, it is needed to be mentioned that it has a quite intrinsic effect on the unethical development of the country. If these people can be made civilized and paid a consistent payment it may help in the essential development of these people. On the other hand, the problems are also needed to be resolved so that it must not take any drab look. Cohesive approach of the country in order to manage these people is also appeared to be an intrinsic idea needed to be intrinsically developed. As people are getting more conscious in their approaches, handling this problem is becoming quite intrinsic.
